However, queer BIPOC scholars, such as Roderick Ferguson, have challenged this assumption asking us to consider how race shapes our ability to be out or visible because U.S. queerness is largely centered around and understood through an invisible whiteness.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThus, queer BIPOC folx run the risk of not only losing familial connections, but also cultural connections in the act of coming out of the closet. Ferguson’s work led to the more formalized development of queer of color theory and critique; however, twenty-three years after Ferguson raised this critique, where are we as queer BIPOC folx? What is the utility of the closet in this contemporary cultural and political climate for queer folx, especially BIPOC members of our community? How does the ability to “pass” play into discussions of the closet? Please see this month’s topic below; however, future topics include problematizing the closet paradigm from a BIPOC perspective, race, power, and difference in dynamics (not race play), sissification and sissy play, findom, and intersectional feminism and kink.
